Foundational Characteristics Servant Leadership-Value Addition

Servant leadership is fast becoming the most effective leadership style.  When leaders prioritize serving others, supporting, coaching and motivating them, they can influence others to accomplish their greatest potential. This approach fosters an environment where individuals feel valued and respected, enabling their personal and professional growth while concurrently accomplishing team and organizational goals.  Five key characteristics of the servant leadership style are:

  1. Others-Centered Mindset - Servant leaders prioritize the needs of others, considering the “whole-self” including the home-work life balance, over their own. Their selflessness fosters trust, motivating team members to support their leader and organization.

  2. Value Addition (our focus here on #4 of 5 in the Series) - Enhancing value begins with positivity and encouragement. By acknowledging achievements and expressing gratitude, servant leaders inspire higher quality work among their teams.  Pardon me as the engineer in me creates an equation for what takes place in “value addition”.  These mathematical equations capture the impact of value addition on the individual, co-workers, and the entire team:


Equation 1: 

(Servant Leader + Value Addition + Engaged Employee) ≈ 2 × (Original Employee Potential)


Equation 2:

(Engaged Employee) × (Positive Influence on Co-workers) ≈ 1.5 × (Lift in Positive Momentum)


Value Addition creates a domino effect of incremental employee growth across multiple employees enhancing the overall team impact on accomplishing goals and driving momentum in the business!


Equation 3:

        Momentum = (Engaged Employee × Positive Influence on Co-workers)


  1. Active Listening - Effective servant leaders are attentive listeners, fully engaging with others' thoughts and perspectives. They aim to understand before seeking to be understood and act on the insights they gather to improve processes.

  2. Lead by Example - Servant leaders demonstrate hard work and integrity, embodying their values. They collaborate with their teams and treat others with the respect they seek.

  3. Empathy & Balancing Results - While striving to accomplish goals, servant leaders recognize the importance of nurturing relationships. They establish clear goals while showing compassion throughout the journey.


Successful servant leaders can demonstrate "value addition" in several impactful ways:

  1. Personalized Recognition: Actively acknowledge individual and team achievements, both big and small. A servant leader can implement regular check-ins to highlight specific contributions, celebrate milestones, and provide personalized notes of appreciation.

  2. Constructive Feedback and Development: Use coaching sessions as opportunities for growth by providing constructive feedback focusing on strengths and areas for growth.  A servant leader offers resources, training opportunities, and actionable steps empowering team members to enhance their skills and confidence. This approach shows a commitment to development and encourages a growth mindset.

  3. Creating a Supportive Environment: Foster a culture where team members feel valued and encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and express concerns. A servant leader facilitates open discussions, actively listening to team input, and involving them in decision-making. This adds value to the team’s collective insights &strengthens both trust & collaboration.


I have seen remarkable growth trajectories changed in employees impacting their near-term career and their personal lives.  Value addition facilitated effectively by a servant leader often results in employees accomplishing and achieving more than they personally anticipated.  I have seen the “spark of realization” flash in the eyes of my direct reports over my career.  There is nothing more gratifying to experience this moment of the time of inflection when the employee is fueled and launched into a new sense of possibilities and potential.
